Achalanatha: Coming to know the nature of the flames
This talk was given at the Festival of Achalanatha Bodhisattva at Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple.
Achalanatha, whose name means the "immovable one", is shown sitting in meditation in the midst of the flames of greed, hate and delusion. Through meditation we begin to see the importance of coming to know the nature of these flames, as it is only by knowing how we feed them that we can come to let go of them. They are the flames of our own suffering, the flames of our own confusion and disturbance, but if we are willing to just experience them as they are, their very nature points us towards finding their ending.
Achalanatha embodies the willingness to sit still within whatever is present right now; the determination and resolve not be driven from our sitting place by either trying to indulge or suppress the thoughts, feelings and emotions that arise.
