If you are interested in learning to meditate, the best way to do that is to come along to one of our introductory events. These are a good opportunity to find out about the temple and our practice, and to have a go at meditation. If you are new to meditation in our tradition we recommend that you come to one of these first, and after this you will then be able to join in easily with any of the other events.
When is the next Introductory Event?
We hold introductory events on some Saturday mornings, some Saturday afternoons, and also on alternate Tuesday evenings. The next introductory events are:
If you can't make any of these times please call or email, as we can usually arrange an introduction at another time that will suit you.
For other events please see the monthly calendar.
What does it involve?
Meditation is the basis of our practice, so an introduction to this is an important part of a first visit. You don't need to be able to sit cross-legged, as we also have chairs and meditation benches that you can use. Most people these days use a bench or a chair, as only a small number of people are flexible enough to be able to sit comfortably in a cross-legged position. Sitting in any of these three main postures is fine, as it is the position of the back that is important in meditation, not the position of the legs.
What else is covered?
These are the areas that an introductory event will cover:
Introduction to the Temple and our practice - about 15 minutes
Meditation Instruction and a meditation period - about an hour in total
A talk about establishing a meditation practice - with tea and biscuits
Brief introduction to other aspects of Zen Buddhism
There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
How do I get there?
We are just off the ring road on the south side of Leicester (address details), easily accessible from Junction 21 of the M1. If you are coming by public transport, the No. 44a bus stops just around the corner in Hylion Road. You can pick it up at the Haymarket bus station or right in front of the Railway Station on London Road (stand EE). For more details see the travel page.
What do I need to bring?
It is a good idea to wear loose-fitting clothes for meditation. Other than this there is nothing in particular that you need to bring, as we have a wide range of meditation equipment available for you to use.
Who can come to an Introductory Event?
Introductory Events are open to anyone who is interested in meditation and Buddhist practice. If you are under 18, you will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for attending an introductory event, or any other temple event. The temple is dependent on donations for its continued existence, and any support you are able to offer is greatly appreciated.
Once you have been to an introductory event you are very welcome to come along to any of the events that we hold. If you are fairly new to Buddhism you may be interested in coming to Basic Buddhism Evenings which are held on a Thursday evening.
