Bodhidharma meets the Emperor

Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple, Leicester Posted on 20 September, 2016 by Aiden HallApril 28, 2020

Bodhidharma meets Emperor Wu . The Emperor asks him what merit he has accrued from his widespread support of Buddhism, and Bodhidharma replies, “No merit”. The Emperor then asks, “What is the most holy teaching”, and Bodhidharma replies, “There is nothing holy”.

When the Emperor asks who it is that is facing him, Bodhidharma replies, “I don’t know.” Following this meeting, Bodhidharma headed north to the neighbouring Kindom of Wei, where he sat in silent meditation at Shaolin Monastery.

This talk discusses Bodhidharma’s meeting with the Emperor, and the very direct answers which he gives to the Emperor’s questions. These discuss the nature of giving and merit, and reveal Bodhidharma’s understanding of what Buddhist practice is.

Exploring the nature of the “beast of self”

Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple, Leicester Posted on 9 April, 2016 by Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple, LeicesterNovember 13, 2022

Rev. Aiden Hall, Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple This talk was given at the Festival of Manjusri Bodhisattva at Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple. Manjusri is the Bodhisattva of Wisdom. An important aspect of the wisdom that Manjusri points to is the practical wisdom to understand the ways in which we cause harm and suffering, and to refrain from these. It can seem to us as though we have a “bodhisattva” aspect – we want to live well and to benefit beings … Continue reading →

Rev. Aiden Hall, Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple This talk was given at the Festival of the Buddha’s Renunciation at Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple in March 2016. Renunciation, or letting go, is central to Buddhist practice, and the story of the Buddha’s Renunciation is a way of conveying the importance of this. In the story, the Buddha makes a big change in his circumstances by leaving his family. Is this what we each need to do? Is the story really about … Continue reading →

Rev. Aiden Hall, Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple This talk was given at the Festival of Avalokiteshwara at Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple in February 2016. Compassion lies at the heart of the Universe. We see that others suffer as we do, and the name of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshwara, means “The one who hears the cries of the world”. When we are willing to listen, we hear these cries – but how then should we respond? We may not know … Continue reading →

Letting go of ideas about enlightenment

Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple, Leicester Posted on 17 December, 2015 by Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple, LeicesterNovember 13, 2022

Rev. Aiden Hall, Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple This talk was given at the Festival of the Buddha’s Enlightenment at Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple in December 2015. Enlightenment isn’t just an idea or a concept. The Buddha said he was enlightened about the nature of reality, which he expressed in the Four Noble Truths and other central teachings. It’s no use us trying to reach our idea of what enlightenment is, as this idea is never reliable. We too must come … Continue reading →

Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple, Leicester Posted on 21 November, 2015 by Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple, LeicesterNovember 13, 2022

Rev. Aiden Hall, Turning Wheel Buddhist Temple An important position is given to the founders of a temple, as without their dedication and practice, Buddhism would not be available to us here today. Who are the Founders? How do we view them, and how does this relate to our own practice here and now? How do we express our gratitude for being able to practise Buddhism today, to all those in the past who have passed on the teaching? This … Continue reading →
