Introduction to Meditation

If you are interested in learning to meditate, you are very welcome to come along to the temple for an Introduction to Meditation. This is a good opportunity to find out about the temple and our practice, and to have a go at meditation. If you are new to meditation in our tradition then coming for an introduction is an essential first step, and after this you will then be able to join in easily with any of our other events.

When can I come for an Introduction?

If you would like to come for an Introduction to Meditation, please contact us, preferably by email, to arrange a day and time that would work for you. We can usually offer an introduction during the day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays, or on weekend afternoons. Other times might be possible too.

What does it involve?

Meditation is the basis of our practice, so an introduction to this is an important part of a first visit. You don’t need to be able to sit cross-legged, as we also have chairs and meditation benches that you can use. Most people these days use a bench or a chair, as only a small number of people are flexible enough to be able to sit comfortably in a cross-legged position. Sitting in any of these three main postures is fine, as it is the position of the back that is important in meditation, not the position of the legs.

Meditation Equipment

You can meditate sitting on a cushion, a bench or a chair

What else is covered?

These are the areas that an introductory event will cover:

Introduction to the Temple and our practice
Meditation Instruction and a meditation period – about an hour in total
A talk about establishing a meditation practice
Brief introduction to other aspects of Zen Buddhism

There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

How do I get there?

We are just off the ring road on the south side of Leicester (address details), easily accessible from Junction 21 of the M1. If you are coming by public transport, the No. 44a bus stops a few minutes walk away from the temple. You can pick it up at the Haymarket bus station or right in front of the Railway Station on London Road (stand EE). For more details see the travel page.

What do I need to bring?

It is a good idea to wear loose-fitting clothes for meditation. Other than this there is nothing in particular that you need to bring, as we have a wide range of meditation equipment available for you to use.

Who can come to an Introduction?

We are very happy to offer an introduction to anyone who is interested in meditation and Buddhist practice. If you are under 18, you will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for attending an introductory event, or any other temple event. The temple is dependent on donations for its continued existence, and any support you are able to offer is greatly appreciated.

What next?

Once you have had an introduction to meditation you are very welcome to come along to any of the events that we hold. These are generally held at the weekends and on some weekday evenings, and we will tell you all about these at the Introduction.
